Light in the Dark - Review

From a new Aussie developer, Dreamgate Studios comes the studio's first game on mobile 'Light in the Dark'! Baby Totems have been lost in the maze-like tomb, shine through your light and awaken those little babies!

 Universal App for All Devices

Name: Light in the Dark
Release Date: 16 September 2014
Developer: Dreamgate Studios

Light in the Dark is a Physics-based puzzle game where you have to adjust the obstacles, avoid the enemies and direct your light at the Baby Totems. What makes Light in the Dark so fun and interesting is the new twist it brings to the Physics-puzzle genre. In this game, you have different light color to play with with the aim to direct the correct color to the associating Baby Totem; sometimes, you also have to mix the colors to result in the correct color.

Apart from the main objective, in each level you can also earn up to three stars in which they can be earned by shining the right color of light on each star. Stars are not necessary to complete a level, although they are useful towards the end of each tomb. Once you have collected enough stars, a new tomb will be unlocked - there are currently 4 tombs in Egypt (looking from the icon, the next one seems to be Mayan) and each tomb has a different theme with varied obstacles.

Light in the Dark is certainly a very stimulating game; it is addicting, yet can be very difficult. The difficulty slope steepens fairly rapidly, and within a couple of levels, it gets pretty difficult to earn 3 stars. You have to plan your move very carefully in each level, weighing the laws of reflection and positioning each obstacle. It can be a little tricky to move these objects around; the control should be pretty smooth on a big tablet screen, but it can feel a little cluttered on our iPhone screen.

The game is presented through a light-hearted, whimsical presentation. The graphics are simple, but beautifully colored while the soundtracks are playful and melodic.

Dreamgate has definitely taken off with a strong start; Light in the Dark is both entertaining and fascinating, with a fresh concept and exciting level design. Even though it can get a little tough sometimes and the control is not very efficient on small screens, Light in the Dark still promises a very bright future ahead of Dreamgate Studios!
