Boomzap entertainment's Otherworld series is one of the finest Hidden Object Adventure series in the market; with Otherworld: Omens of Summer just released - we got in touch with Sara Santillan, Philippines-based designer of the Otherworld series to discuss about the game!
Boomzap usually make light-hearted adventure game, why this time you decided to create a slightly darker one?
We wanted to make a fantasy game like our Awakening series, but catered for a more adult / mature audience. From the story to the art, we wanted to see if we could make a "dark and beautiful" game without going too creepy or gory.
From the start, what is your inspiration to create Otherworld series?
We were inspired by stories of dark fay magic mixing with our modern world. Neil Gaiman, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Pan's Labyrinth were early sources of inspiration.
What is the biggest challenge you faced when you developing the game?
Implementing a lot of the new features, not just on the design side but on other places as well. How will we show the feature? How will we teach the player its mechanics? How does it make the game better? How will we test it? Things like those really add up, especially for our new non-linear feature.
Having the mindset that 'something must be different in this game' usually pushes us to think of new things. We always wanted to try a non-linear game, and we took a gamble with it. Hopefully, it paid off!
Spring, Summer - can we expect Autumn and Winter to be released in the future?
We certainly hope so! :)
