Journey: The Heart of Gaia is one of the best light-hearted and the most imaginative games of 2012. Here is Anna Popereko, Associate Producer at WaterLily Games and the person behind "Journey: The Heart of Gaia" to tell us more on what it was like behind the scenes.
Waterlily Games Studio is a subsidiary of Frogwares focusing on casual games development. Our dedicated team is inspired to do their best and deliver great storylines, puzzles and fun. Our first casual game, Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of The Baskervilles, was an instant success back in 2010 earning a Best Story Award at Big Fish Games. The consequent release on iPad, and later on iPhone, expanded our audience. In 2011, we then repeated this overwhelming success with Dracula: Love Kills – a dark and creepy casual game dedicated to the Prince of Darkness and the painful duel between good and evil.
Both games illustrate our passion towards what we are doing, showing that apparently we are doing it right. We are backed with developers who have experience in classic adventure games: mysterious and very deep ones like the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series.
This leads to the main challenge while developing this game. We wanted to produce a fairy-tale in a dream-like unknown world. This is where the concept of Gaia comes in. Gaia is believed to be the Mother Earth, the spiritual embodiment of the earth, or the Goddess of the Earth. Liz Lidenbrock, our main character, feels a gut instinct when travelling to the Underworld that the Gaia Heart is dying, threatening to destroy all life on and within our planet. Ultimately, our heroes travel to the City of the Dark Sun to challenge the force of evil in mortal combat.
By any possible stretch one can not say that Journey: The Heart of Gaia is a childish game to play. The twisted plot is enforced with complicated puzzles that will defy your wits. Our ambition to make a controversial game for the well-established genre is achieved. We bypassed the common flow in the casual games market and it really makes us feel proud!
We are now working to offer all our games on iPad. You can expect both Journey: The Heart of Gaia and Dracula: Love Kills to arrive on iOS pretty soon. You can also enjoy the recently released Nintendo 3DS game – Sherlock Holmes and The Mystery of The Frozen City. It is also very bright and cheerful even though it is dedicated to the world’s most famous detective. So we are pretty busy here at Waterlily Games studio and promise to deliver new thrilling adventures!
